# VPS, dedicated or web hosting: choose the responsibility you need

The best hosting choice starts with the work you want to do. A WordPress site, a custom API and a large data-processing service can all run on a server, but they do not need the same level of control or maintenance.

## The practical takeaway

Choose web hosting for a website-focused control panel, a VPS for operating-system control, and dedicated hardware when the whole physical machine is part of the requirement.

## Start with the application and its owner

Write down what will run, who will maintain it and what would make it unavailable. Include the database, background workers, uploads and email dependencies rather than counting only the public website. Decide who will apply updates, investigate logs and restore data after a mistake. These responsibilities often separate two otherwise similar hosting choices.

A small agency that wants to publish websites through a panel has a different requirement from a developer who needs a specific Linux package or a long-running process. Extra CPU does not remove that distinction. Choose a service model first, then size the resources inside it.

## Compare the three foundations

| Choose | A useful starting point | You take responsibility for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Web hosting | Websites, email and databases through cPanel or Plesk | Website content, application updates and account access |
| Cloud VPS | Custom services, APIs, containers and operating-system access | Operating system, services, access controls and application data |
| Dedicated server | A full physical machine and larger resource allocations | Server administration, workload design and recovery planning |

Keystone Web uses cPanel, while Gateway Web uses Plesk and includes WordPress Toolkit in its published feature set. The first configuration in either range lists one website, 30 GB of SSD storage and ten MySQL databases. Those limits are more useful for a website project than comparing its plan name with the core count of a server.

Cloud VPS gives you KVM virtual resources and full operating-system control. Watchtower Cloud 01 lists two vCPUs, 4 GB of memory and 20 GB of storage. Vanguard Cloud uses AMD EPYC resources and a different CPU-to-memory balance. A virtual core is not an exclusive physical processor; use the detailed specification and your application behaviour together.

## Know when a whole machine is useful

Citadel Metal is a single-tenant physical-server range. Its first configuration lists a dual Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 build, 28 cores, 56 threads, 256 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD layout. That is a substantial change in allocation and operational scope. It is useful when the physical machine itself matters, rather than simply because a project might grow later.

For media delivery, compare included bandwidth as carefully as hardware. Standard metal ranges distinguish a 10 Gbit/s physical port from 1 Gbit/s of included bandwidth; Signal Metal lists 10 Gbit/s unmetered connectivity. A port label alone does not describe the service you should budget around.

## Make a decision you can review later

- List the software, storage growth and services that must run continuously.

- Identify the person responsible for updates, access and recovery.

- Select a region, then compare the exact resources and available billing periods.

- Keep an independent recovery copy and write down how to restore it.

- Review real workload measurements before changing the resource allocation.

An API with moderate memory needs and custom dependencies is a sensible VPS candidate. A brochure website maintained through a familiar control panel is a sensible web-hosting candidate. A workload that requires a whole physical machine belongs in a dedicated-server comparison. These are starting points, not benchmarks or promises about how much traffic one configuration will handle.

Use the catalogue comparison to inspect two or three relevant configurations. Then bring the team the actual requirements, especially when software licences, unusual network needs or a migration schedule are involved. A clear brief leads to a better choice than buying the largest number on a card.

Product examples use the published HM Bastion catalogue. Availability, prices and selectable options are shown when you configure an order.
